The Expedition

Expedition Details

In December 2008, five Hamilton/Halton area men will ski to the South Pole in support of local kids’ programs. The members of the South Pole Expedition for Kids team are covering all expedition and administration costs so that 100% of the funds raised can go directly to the selected charities.

Inspired by their highly successful Top of the World Expedition in 2006, where they trekked to the North Pole and raised half a million dollars for childrens’ charities, they are now set to test their limits in Antarctica.

This will be a grueling 200km journey on cross-country skis in -40°C to -60°C weather at an effective altitude of 12,000 feet. Burning 8,000 – 10,000 calories a day, and towing a sled with a weight of 100lbs, they expect to be on the ice plateau for over two weeks. They will ski up to 10 hours per day with short breaks for food and hydration.

The team members will be involved in all aspects of the expedition from hauling all gear to daily tent set-up, cooking, boiling water, navigation and gear maintenance.

Battling relentless winds, extreme cold and demanding physical requirements, this will be their greatest personal challenge to date.
